Shillong, September 9: Village leaders from Noapara, a border village in the Langpih area of West Khasi Hills district, on Wednesday met Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Home (Police), Prestone Tynsong, and urged the State Government to set up a temporary police camp in the village to protect residents from alleged harassment by Assam Police.
The delegation raised concerns following an incident on September 3, 2026, when a dispute reportedly broke out in Noapara after Assam Police personnel and government officials allegedly entered the village without prior intimation to the West Khasi Hills district administration.
According to the village leaders, the Assam team attempted to carry out Census-related enumeration and Special Intensive Revision (SIR) activities in the village despite the Meghalaya Government having already conducted enumeration there. The villagers, comprising Khasi and Garo residents, reportedly objected to the exercise, leading to tension in the area.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, village leader S.R. Marak said Tynsong informed the delegation that he had directed the Meghalaya Chief Secretary to take up the matter with his Assam counterpart.
Marak said the intervention was aimed at ensuring that residents of Meghalaya living along the inter-state border are not subjected to further harassment or interference by authorities from Assam. The village leaders also reiterated their demand for a temporary police camp at Noapara to ensure the safety and security of residents in the sensitive border area.
