Shillong, September 18: Additional Superintendent of Police (Traffic), East Khasi Hills, Lovish Garg sustained serious injuries after being hit by a scooty whose occupants allegedly attempted to evade a police checkpoint at Urkaliar early Friday, police said. The incident occurred around 1.30 am near the Samkhamti Petrol Pump, where police personnel were conducting naka checking as part of law-and-order arrangements.
According to East Khasi Hills police, the scooty, carrying two men, allegedly proceeded aggressively towards the checkpoint and failed to stop despite repeated directions from personnel on duty. Garg intervened and signalled the rider to stop. Instead of complying, the rider allegedly accelerated and struck the officer before attempting to escape, police claimed.
The injured officer was immediately rushed to Woodland Hospital for emergency treatment and later shifted to the High Dependency Unit for further medical care. Police said the circumstances indicated that the act may have been deliberate and intended to cause grievous injury to the officer while evading the checkpoint. A case is being registered for attempted murder.
The two accused are suspected to be members of the Khasi Students’ Union, police said. Their reason for travelling at that hour and allegedly attempting to evade the naka is being investigated. Police said strict checking operations would continue in the interest of public safety and the maintenance of law and order.
The public has been urged to comply with lawful directions issued by police personnel during such operations. Any attempt to evade a checkpoint or obstruct officers on duty will be dealt with firmly under the law, police warned.
