Jowai, September 24: Jowai Police have traced and recovered 47 lost or stolen mobile phones using technological tools and investigative techniques, officials said.
The recovered devices were handed over to their legitimate owners following verification and the completion of necessary procedures.
Police had received complaints from residents regarding mobile phones reported missing or stolen over a period of time. Investigators subsequently traced the devices to different locations within and outside the district, including places beyond Meghalaya.
An investigation is underway to establish the chain of people through whom the mobile phones changed hands and determine how they reached the locations from which they were recovered.
Police said appropriate legal action would be taken against anyone found involved in stealing, receiving or unlawfully dealing with the devices.
The district police also cautioned the public against purchasing second-hand mobile phones from unknown or unauthorised sellers without first verifying their ownership and authenticity, as such devices could be stolen property.
Efforts are continuing to trace more missing and stolen phones and reunite them with their rightful owners, police added.
