Shillong, September 26: The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO) has issued a final notice to banks against opening their branches and conducting regular operations in Meghalaya on Sunday, September 27.
In a notification issued on September 25, CoMSO said the authorities had failed to reconsider the decision despite objections raised by the organisation and concerns expressed by people in the state.
The confederation maintained that Sunday is a sacred day of worship, family and community life in Meghalaya and said its significance should not be disregarded for administrative convenience.
CoMSO warned that if any bank proceeds with regular operations on Sunday, it will mobilise people and its constituent organisations to oppose such establishments across the state.
It said responsibility for any resulting action would rest with the authorities and institutions that had allegedly ignored the religious sentiments and concerns of Meghalaya’s people.
CoMSO called upon all concerned banks to reconsider the decision immediately and respect the state’s distinct religious and social character.
The notification was issued by CoMSO general secretary Balkarin Ch. Marak.
