Shillong, September 27: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) and Achik Youth Welfare Organisation (AYWO) on Sunday launched a drive in different parts of Meghalaya to shut banks found operating on the Christian day of worship.
According to a statement, various District, Circle and Unit branches of the organisations carried out the action on September 27, 2026, against banks that were open and conducting business on Sunday.
The organisations said the move was intended to underline the religious significance of Sunday, which is observed as a special day of worship by Christians across the state.
They maintained that banks and other establishments should respect Sunday as a day of worship and congregation, particularly in a state where a large section of the population follows the Christian faith.
The organisations also said employees should be given an opportunity to attend religious services, spend time with their families and fulfil their religious obligations.
They urged banks and other establishments that continue to operate on Sundays to reconsider the practice and respect the religious sentiments and traditions of the people.
