Shillong, October 2: Posters carrying derogatory messages targeting Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong and East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem were found pasted at several locations in Mawkhar and Motphran on Friday.
The posters were spotted on walls and a tin fence near the office of the Sub-Divisional School Education Officer (SDSEO) at Mawkhar, on a pillar near the entrance to the Synod Complex, outside shops at Motphran and in the area surrounding the statue of former KSU leader Bull N. Lyngdoh. The posters were noticed on October 2 and are suspected to have been put up during the night, when movement in the Mawkhar and Motphran areas had reduced. Officials from the district administration and police later removed the posters after photographs of them began circulating on social media.
The development comes amid controversy over allegations of illegal collection of money from trucks at temporary police check posts at Mawkhanu and Thangshalai. Earlier, members of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) had entered the locations and raised allegations that police personnel deployed there were collecting money from heavy vehicles. The East Khasi Hills Police subsequently initiated an enquiry into the allegations.
An AI-generated video containing derogatory content targeting Tynsong and Syiem had also circulated on social media following the controversy. Police have maintained that the allegations concerning illegal money collection are being investigated and that appropriate action will follow on the basis of established facts.
