Shillong, October 8: St. Joseph’s Secondary School, Laitkor, East Khasi Hills, celebrated its centenary year, marking 100 years since its establishment in 1926, with a programme honouring teachers, former teachers and past pupils.
Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui attended the celebration as chief guest, while MLA A.L. Hek was present as guest of honour. Fr. Francis Kharpran, teachers, former teachers, parents and students also attended the programme.
The centenary celebration featured student performances and reflections on the school’s century-long journey and its contribution to education in the area.
Addressing the gathering, Rymbui said education should not be viewed merely as a pathway to securing a government job, but as a means of preparing young people to face challenges in life and become self-reliant.
He also stressed the importance of identifying and developing individual talents alongside formal education.
The Education Minister highlighted the Meghalaya government’s initiatives to provide opportunities for young people to develop skills and encouraged students to explore their abilities, saying that no work should be considered inferior or superior.
Rymbui also urged teachers to continuously update and retrain themselves in view of rapid changes in technology and the wider world.
Speaking on the occasion, Hek praised the founders of the institution for bringing education to Laitkor and encouraged students to work hard, remain resilient and recognise their own strengths and potential.
The centenary celebration marked a major milestone for St. Joseph’s Secondary School, commemorating its past while encouraging the present generation to carry forward its legacy of education and service.
