Deficit School Teachers Threaten to Intensify Agitation, Accuse Government of Misleading Them

Shillong, October 14: Deficit school teachers under the Khasi Jaintia Deficit School Teachers Association (KJDSTA) and the Garo Hills Deficit School Teachers and Employees Association have threatened to intensify their agitation if the Meghalaya Government fails to address their long-pending demands. The warning comes as teachers across Khasi, Jaintia and Garo Hills continue their three-day mass casual leave protest, which is scheduled to conclude on October 15.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, KJDSTA President Boswell Pala said the two associations would soon hold a joint meeting to decide their next course of action, including exploring alternative forms of protest to mount further pressure on the State Government. He asserted that the teachers would not withdraw their agitation until their grievances were adequately addressed.

Pala also accused the State Education Department of attempting to mislead teachers through its recent announcement regarding the release of Dearness Allowance (DA) and arrears. He alleged that the announcement was merely an attempt to pacify the protesting teachers, claiming that the issue had remained unresolved for the past three years. Expressing dissatisfaction with the government’s response, Pala said the authorities had also failed to address the associations’ demand for the withdrawal of the Scheme 2026.

According to him, the proposed scheme seeks to abolish the Centralised Provident Fund (CPF), to which teachers have been contributing from their own salaries. He maintained that despite repeated representations, the government had not taken concrete steps to resolve the issue. The teachers’ associations reiterated that their movement would continue until the State Government takes meaningful action to address their demands, warning that further agitation could follow the conclusion of the ongoing mass casual leave protest.
