19-Year-Old Woman Suffers Severe Burn Injuries in Shillong, Minor Boy Taken Into Custody

Shillong, November 6: A 19-year-old woman from East Khasi Hills district sustained severe burn injuries, reportedly extending from her head to her waist, prompting her family to lodge a police complaint seeking action against a minor boy who was allegedly living with her in a locality in New Shillong. The woman is currently undergoing treatment at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) Hospital in Shillong.

According to the complaint lodged by the victim’s mother at Mawdiangdiang Police Outpost, her daughter had informed the family that she would be travelling to Guwahati on October 29, 2026, to attend a programme and was expected to return home on November 1. However, at around 3.30 am on November 1, the mother reportedly received information that her daughter had suffered extensive burn injuries, affecting her body from the head down to the waist.

Following the incident, the mother approached the police and lodged a complaint seeking the arrest of a boy aged below 18, who was reportedly residing with her daughter in a locality in New Shillong. Acting on the complaint, police took the minor boy into custody and subsequently placed him at the Juvenile and Observation Home in Shillong.

The exact circumstances surrounding the incident and the cause of the woman’s burn injuries have not been established. Meanwhile, leaders of the Seng Kur Thabah Seng Kmie have strongly condemned the incident. The case has raised concerns over the circumstances in which the young woman sustained the injuries, with the family seeking police intervention and appropriate action.
