19-Year-Old Woman Succumbs to Severe Burn Injuries at NEIGRIHMS

Shillong, November 7: A 19-year-old woman who had sustained severe burn injuries, reportedly extending from her head to the middle portion of her body, died while undergoing treatment at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) in Shillong on Saturday.

According to information provided by her family, the woman breathed her last at approximately 1:52 pm on November 7, 2026, after undergoing treatment for the injuries she had sustained earlier this month.

The incident had previously prompted the victim’s mother to lodge a First Information Report (FIR) at Mawdiangdiang Police Outpost, seeking action against a minor boy, aged below 18, who was reportedly staying with her daughter in a locality in New Shillong.

In her complaint, the mother stated that her daughter had informed the family that she would be travelling to Guwahati on October 29, 2026, to attend a programme and was expected to return home on November 1.

However, at approximately 3:30 am on November 1, the mother received information that her daughter had sustained severe burn injuries extending from her head to the middle portion of her body.

The injured woman was subsequently admitted to NEIGRIHMS Hospital in Shillong, where she remained under medical treatment. Despite undergoing treatment, she succumbed to her injuries on Saturday afternoon.

Following the complaint lodged by the victim’s mother, police took the minor boy into custody in connection with the incident. The boy is currently lodged at the Juvenile and Observation Home in Shillong.
