Tura, May 23: The All Garo Hills SSA School Teachers Association – Central Body (AGHSSASTA-CB) on Friday organised a special honouring ceremony for Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma at Matchakolgre LP School playground in Tura in recognition of his support towards teachers’ welfare and the education sector in Meghalaya.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister described the occasion as historic, stating that for the first time in the state’s history, authorities who issue certificates were themselves being honoured with certificates. He thanked the SSA Teachers’ Association for organising the felicitation programme and acknowledged the often-unrecognised efforts of teachers and officials.
Reaffirming that education remains one of the government’s highest priorities, Sangma recalled the lifelong commitment of the late P. A. Sangma towards the education sector. He said the government is working to introduce meaningful reforms and improvements in the education system based on those principles.
Speaking on the long-standing issues faced by SSA teachers, the Chief Minister said he had been trying to resolve their concerns since his tenure as a Member of Parliament and had repeatedly raised the issue in Parliament. He emphasised that the challenges faced by SSA teachers were not only about salaries but also about dignity and job security.
Commissioner and Secretary of the Education Department, Vijay Kumar Mantri, highlighted the ongoing transformation taking place in the education sector under the Chief Minister’s leadership. He said the government is focusing on strengthening governance systems, improving transparency, leveraging technology and creating better opportunities for both teachers and students.
During the programme, AGHSSASTA-CB president Labingstone G. Momin expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister for prioritising teachers’ welfare and continuously investing in Meghalaya’s education sector. He also lauded the government’s efforts to address the long-pending grievances of SSA teachers.
The event featured cultural performances, including a traditional Wangala dance presented by SSA teachers from Ampati, celebrating the heritage and unity of the Garo Hills teaching community.
