Shillong, April 15: An HDFC ATM in Wapungskur Village, East Jaintia Hills District, was targeted by thieves in the early hours of April 14, with the suspects captured on CCTV during the operation.
According to reports, the incident occurred at around 2:24 AM when two individuals broke into the ATM and stole cash. A crime scene team later reached the site at approximately 12:30 PM to begin investigation.
Police deployed a sniffer dog to track the suspects, while evidence collected from the spot included a gas cylinder and tools allegedly used to cut open the ATM machine, which were left behind by the thieves as they fled.
East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police, Pankaj Kumar Rasgania, IPS, confirmed that an amount of approximately Rs 9,57,900 was stolen in the incident. Preliminary findings indicate that the accused had stolen a Bolero pickup vehicle prior to the crime, which they used to reach the location. The vehicle was later abandoned at the scene, and the suspects escaped on foot.
The SP stated that further details could not be disclosed at this stage as the police team is currently engaged in preparing reports for submission to the High Court and Judicial Commission. Investigation into the case is ongoing.
