Ban on use of plastic items around DC office at Ampati

Ampati, June 12 : In an effort to minimize use of plastic by enforcing strict regulations and guidelines and to ensure proper disposal and management of plastic waste, South West Garo Hills Deputy Commissoner Hema Nayak has recently issued an order strictly prohibiting use of plastic bags, covers and other plastic items below 120 microns within the jurisdiction of the DC’s Office, Ampati.

The Deputy Commissioner’s order dated 10.5.2025, states that use of plastic has been found to adversely affect the ecosystem and environment, leading to significant ecological degradation and that plastic waste cannot be easily recycled or safely destroyed, causing substantial waste management problems and accumulation of garbage in public places.

It further states that efforts have been made to raise awareness among the general public in this regard as well as the the illegality of using plastic below a certain thickness, specifically 120 microns or more, to mitigate its harmful impact on the environment.

Besides prohibition on use of plastic items, the Deputy Commissioner also issued directives for continued efforts to educate the public on harmful effects of plastic use and the need to adhere to the regulations; implementation of effective measures for proper collection, segregation and disposal of plastic waste and for all departments to strictly comply with the order and take necessary action against violations.

It also added that regular monitoring and inspection would be conducted to assess the effectiveness of the above measures and identify areas for improvement.
