Shillong, August 24: A resident of Mawlai Nongpathaw, Shillong, H. Bansiewdor Nonglang, has approached the Officer-in-Charge of Sadar Police Station seeking registration of an FIR against a Facebook user identified as “Satya Ranjan Borah” over alleged hate speech, communal incitement and derogatory remarks targeting Meghalaya and its indigenous communities.
In his written complaint dated August 24, Nonglang alleged that the individual had published a “highly vitriolic and incendiary” post on Facebook following the events in Shillong on August 19, 2026.
According to the complaint, the post allegedly used abusive, defamatory and derogatory language against the State of Meghalaya and its indigenous tribal communities. The complainant alleged that the Facebook user had described the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) and Meghalaya Chief Minister as agents of “Christian missionaries” and had made further derogatory remarks against the people of Meghalaya.
Nonglang alleged that the contents of the post were intended to foment communal disharmony and hatred between communities in Meghalaya and Assam and could disturb public peace and tranquillity.
The complaint further alleged that the posts targeted indigenous communities, including the Khasi, Pnar, Bhoi and War communities, and could adversely affect the long-standing relations and peaceful coexistence between the Assamese community and indigenous communities of Meghalaya.
The complainant also alleged that such posts could have wider consequences by disrupting inter-State trade and local commerce and affecting the livelihoods of people in Meghalaya.
Seeking immediate legal action, Nonglang urged Sadar Police Station to register an FIR and initiate a cyber investigation to establish the identity and whereabouts of the person operating the Facebook profile.
He also requested the police to direct Meta Platforms, Inc. to preserve relevant electronic evidence and furnish user registration details in accordance with applicable law. The complaint further sought stringent legal action against the alleged offender.
Nonglang said he had enclosed printed screenshots of the alleged Facebook post and the profile of the user as documentary evidence and urged the police to take prompt action in the matter.
