Bhoirymbong Block and Faith Foundation observes Menstrual Health And Hygiene Day

Shillong, May, 31: On the occasion of the International Menstrual Health and Hygiene Day 2025, a group of Adolescents Girls and youth from the villages of Bhoirymbong Block namely Syllei U Lar, Umsawriang, Umktieh Pdeng, Umktieh Nongshilliang, Umkiet Mawkhim and Umktieh Lawsiatsngiang collaborated with the Faith Foundation to observed this day on the 31st May 2025 at Umroi Presbyterian HS School. Adolescent boys and girls from the 6 villages along with teachers, mothers and young men attended the event.  

The Faith Foundation presented an exploratory study “Indigenous food and its linkage to nutrition and menstrual health” and shared the knowledge about Indigenous wild edibles, fish and meat that are rich resources readily available in our land. They stressed on the importance of Food as medicine and nutrition to support menstruating girls and women.

The highlight of this event was young organisers presented a skit on the issue of destigmatising Menstruation and encouraging open discussions. A Menstrual Museum was installed which showcased the different kinds of menstrual products and their uses, posters on menstruation and its cycle, Indigenous wild medicinal plants and art work by the adolescents themselves. A Myths and Facts corner to demystify the superstitious beliefs on menstruation in our communities was also displayed.

The chief guest on the occasion, Dr. Marbabiang Syiemlieh, Senior Consultant, State Health System Resource Centre (SHSRC), applauded Faith Foundation for this initiative and added that this day is very important and as we speak and inform others about it, the stigma and taboo will soon be removed from our society.

She also added that we need to talk to our children both boys and girls about puberty and prepare them about the changes in their bodies.
