Shillong, August 11: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has challenged Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to remain in Parliament and face the answers of Union Home Minister Amit Shah instead of allegedly disrupting the proceedings.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, BJP State General Secretary, Wankitbok Pohshna, claimed that although Amit Shah is ready to respond to all questions raised in the House, the Congress, under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership, has repeatedly disrupted Parliament and prevented it from functioning normally.
According to him, Rahul Gandhi initially demanded the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and later sought a discussion on the NEET issue in Parliament. The party said the government not only allowed discussion on the matter but also introduced stricter provisions to deal with examination irregularities and strengthened punishment for those involved in question-paper leaks.
He further alleged that since the beginning of the Monsoon Session in July, the government has provided opportunities for discussion on several issues and for the introduction of important legislation, but the Opposition led by the Congress has repeatedly disrupted proceedings.
He also accused the Congress of showing disrespect towards Parliament and alleged that the party was adopting double standards in its approach to student protests.
The BJP pointed to Congress’ support for students protesting over alleged NEET irregularities in Delhi, while alleging that the party remained silent when students protesting over alleged irregularities in JPSC recruitment in Jharkhand, where Congress shares power with the JMM, faced police action, including tear gas.
The BJP alleged that the Congress leadership was misleading the public and attempting to divert attention from its own shortcomings instead of allowing meaningful debates in Parliament.
The party demanded that Rahul Gandhi and the Congress apologise to the people of the country for allegedly preventing Parliament from functioning properly, stating that repeated disruptions waste both parliamentary time and public money.
The BJP maintained that Parliament is meant to provide a forum for discussing issues affecting citizens and finding solutions, rather than being used to create unnecessary disruption.
