Shillong, February 20 : In a press statement issued today, BJP Meghalaya General Secretary, Wankitbok Pohshna, challenged the recent declaration by Meghalaya Chief Secretary, D.P. Wahlang, regarding the status of the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM). The Chief Secretary had claimed that USTM is a state university supported by the Government of Meghalaya, but Pohshna refuted this claim, highlighting discrepancies in USTM’s own definitions and operational structure.
Pohshna clarified that USTM’s website explicitly states it is a “state private university” founded by an Act of the State Legislative Assembly in 2008. He emphasized that a true state university is maintained by the state government, administered by a public authority, and follows the UGC syllabus. In contrast, USTM is run by the private ERD Foundation from Guwahati, which renders it essentially a private institution.
A major concern raised by Pohshna was the significant difference in fee structures between USTM and state-run universities in Meghalaya. He questioned why USTM charges considerably higher fees compared to other state-supported institutions. Pohshna demanded clarity from the state government on the type of support USTM receives if it is indeed a state university.
Pohshna further demanded a clear explanation of the nature of government support to USTM, in light of statements made by the Chief Secretary. He asked whether the support is in the form of financial subsidies, administrative advice, or any other means. Pohshna stressed that these questions are vital to address growing concerns among students, especially following accusations from Assam’s Chief Minister.
The BJP also raised concerns about the recognition of USTM degrees by the University Grants Commission (UGC), noting that such recognition does not necessarily guarantee the integrity of the evaluation process. Pohshna expressed fears that USTM might be awarding degrees without proper assessments of students’ qualifications, which could lead to the proliferation of unqualified candidates entering the workforce.
Pohshna concluded by urging the Government of Meghalaya to provide transparent answers to these pressing questions, as students and the public remain uncertain about the legitimacy of USTM’s operations and its relationship with the state government.
