Shillong, September 25: A car was set ablaze following a confrontation at Langja village in West Khasi Hills district on Thursday evening after a dispute over a gate erected by the village authorities along an MGNREGS road.
According to a statement issued by West Khasi Hills district police, preliminary inquiry indicated that Michael Sangma had allegedly attempted to drive his vehicle through the gate, triggering an argument with women residents of the village. Police said Sangma subsequently returned home.
Sangma later alleged that some women went to his residence and called him outside, leading to another heated exchange which eventually turned into a physical confrontation. Police said Sangma was allegedly assaulted by members of the public along with others, while his vehicle was damaged and pushed towards the roadside.
Personnel from the Langpih Border Outpost later reached the area and brought the situation under control. The gathering was dispersed by around 11 pm. However, at about 1 am, while police personnel were returning to their post, they received information that Sangma’s car had been set on fire.
Meanwhile, village leaders have filed an FIR in connection with the incident, alleging that Sangma assaulted women who had gone to his residence to discuss his alleged attempt to force his way through the village gate. They further alleged that Sangma injured two men with a sharp object when they intervened during the altercation between him and the women.
Police have launched a detailed investigation into the incident. The allegations made by both sides are yet to be independently established and remain subject to the ongoing police investigation.
