Shillong, April 3 : Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma attended the Golden Jubilee Celebration of the All Meghalaya Karbi Association (AMKA) in Purduwa Kharpati, Ri Bhoi District, on Tuesday. The event marked 50 years of the organization’s contribution to preserving and promoting the Karbi community’s culture and heritage.
During his speech, Chief Minister Sangma honored the sacrifices of Karbi leaders who were instrumental in Meghalaya’s statehood movement. He paid special tribute to the late Valerian Hing Timung, Jaipo Thang Taro, Dominic Timung, Joy Taro, and Chikraw Timung, acknowledging their commitment and the hardships they endured, including imprisonment. “Their names still resonate with us today, and their sacrifices will never be forgotten,” he said.
Sangma emphasized the importance of unity among the diverse communities in the state, declaring that the identity of Meghalaya transcends tribal lines. “No matter which tribe you belong to, no matter which religion you practice, being a citizen of Meghalaya makes you equally important,” the CM asserted, reinforcing the state government’s commitment to ensuring equal development for all citizens.
In recognition of the cultural significance of the Karbi community, the Chief Minister announced a grant of Rs. 50 lakh for the establishment of a Karbi Culture Centre. He reiterated the government’s support for preserving the state’s rich cultural diversity, highlighting efforts to safeguard the traditions of various minority groups including the Khasi, Garo, Rabha, Koch, Hajong, and Karbi communities.
Sangma also addressed the ongoing issues along the Assam-Meghalaya border, particularly in areas of difference. He praised the cooperation between the Assam and Meghalaya governments, along with the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, to ensure peaceful resolution.
He pointed out the lack of proper schooling in these border areas, where children have been forced to study under trees or in homes. However, he noted that with the collective effort of the Assam and Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, a new school is being constructed using funds from the Chief Minister Special Development Fund (CMSDF).
While acknowledging the challenges that remain, the Chief Minister assured the people of Meghalaya that the government is committed to resolving these issues and ensuring sustainable development for all.
