Shillong, April 08 : Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma felicitated the players of Myngken Christian Higher Secondary School, Ri Bhoi district, for their outstanding achievement in securing 3rd place in the prestigious 2nd Indo-French Football Tournament 2025, held in Paris, France.
The 16-member squad, fully sponsored by the Government of Meghalaya, competed against top French clubs- namely, FC Versailles, who came in first place; Sarcelles FC, who secured second place; Meghalaya FC, who clinched the 3rd spot; and Grigny FC, who came in fourth.
The felicitation ceremony, organised by the Department of Sports & Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya, was attended by esteemed dignitaries, officials, and sports enthusiasts. Conrad K. Sangma lauded the young footballers and their coach for their achievement.
The Chief Minister expressed his pride in the Meghalaya Football Team’s achievement, stating that it is a momentous occasion not only for the state but for the entire country. He emphasized the importance of sports, particularly in building character and fitness, and reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting local youth.
The Government of Meghalaya has invested significantly in sports infrastructure, with over Rs 1000 crore spent in the last 6–7 years. This includes the development of 50 artificial turfs and the enhancement of grassroots football to establish Meghalaya as a football powerhouse.
Furthermore, the Chief Minister announced that the Olympique Lyonnais academy, one of the best football club in Europe has invited the Meghalaya Football Team Under-18 for a 20-day training camp in June. He also urged schools to adopt a holistic approach to education, citing MyngkenSchool as a model.
The Chief Minister highlighted the government’s efforts to promote sports, including the establishment of the Centre of Excellence by NEUFC in Mawkhanu, which will be the one of the best residential academy in India.
The ceremony commenced with a welcome speech delivered by D.D. Shira, MCS, Director of Sports & Youth Affairs, Meghalaya. The team’s journey was highlighted by Bobby L. Nongbet, Head Coach cum DSO, Nongpoh, who presented a brief report on their exceptional performance on the international stage.
Dignitaries in attendance included Hamletson Dohling, President, Meghalaya Football Association; D.D. Shira, MCS, Director of Sports & Youth Affairs; Sunesh Syiem, Secretary, Meghalaya Football Association, Bobby L. Nongbet, Head Coach cum DSO, Nongpoh; and other officials from the Sports & Youth Affairs Department. The Principal, teachers of Myngken Christian HSS, and family members of the players were also present.
