CM denies shoot-at-sight order, urges people of Garo Hills to remain calm and ignore rumours

Not Afraid: Conrad Sangma Stays at Home Despite Threats to Burn His House

Tura, March 11: Amid the tense situation in Tura, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has made a strong appeal for peace and calm, while announcing that the GHADC elections have been cancelled for the time being in view of public sentiment and concerns over law and order.

Expressing deep concern over the developments, the Chief Minister said the decision to cancel the elections was taken keeping in mind the feelings of the people and the need to maintain peace and stability in the region. He emphasised that every decision taken by the government is guided by the welfare and voices of the people.

In a video message, Sangma revealed that he had received information that several individuals and groups were heading toward his residence with the intention of burning his house and attacking his family. According to him, security officials had advised him to relocate for safety. However, the Chief Minister said he choose to remain at his residence and declined the suggestion, stating that he was not afraid.

Sangma said his life ultimately rests in the hands of the Lord and reaffirmed his identity as an A·chik (Garo). He added that the legacy of his father, late P. A. Sangma, continues to inspire him to work with courage, honesty and dedication for the welfare of the people.

The Chief Minister expressed concern over incidents of vandalism and destruction reported in several areas, including damage to government property, religious places and intrusion into people’s homes. Such actions, he said, do not reflect the values and traditions of the community.

Appealing for restraint, Sangma urged citizens to refrain from violence and emphasised that the situation can only be resolved through dialogue and constructive engagement. He also called on the public to respect democratic institutions and work collectively towards restoring peace and harmony.

Addressing rumours circulating on social media, the Chief Minister clarified that no shoot-at-sight order has been issued and that no instructions have been given to use live fire against civilians. He explained that security forces, including the army and paramilitary, have been deployed only to assist the police in maintaining law and order and protecting innocent lives.

Highlighting his connection with the people of the region, Sangma said he understands the emotions and concerns of the Garo community, adding that safeguarding lives and restoring peace remain the government’s top priorities.

Concluding his message, the Chief Minister appealed to the people of Garo Hills to remain united, patient and calm, and to resist rumours and misinformation. He stressed that peace and understanding remain the strongest path forward for the region.
