CM Felicitates Sanfida Nongrum as ‘Achiever of the Month’ in Sports

SHILLONG, SEP 8: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday felicitated footballer Sanfida Nongrum as the “Achiever of the Month” in the Sports Edition at a programme held in Shillong.

The event also saw 46 outstanding sportspersons from different disciplines being felicitated for their achievements.

Speaking on the occasion, Sangma said the “Achiever of the Month” programme is aimed at recognising, supporting, motivating and appreciating individuals who have excelled in different fields.

Highlighting the importance of sports, the Chief Minister said the sector has emerged as a major priority for the State Government, with increased budgetary allocation and significant investments in infrastructure and athlete support.

He recalled that a few years ago, sports associations in the State faced several challenges and often continued their activities largely through passion and commitment, with limited government support.

Sangma said the government has since taken steps to address some of these gaps by investing in sports infrastructure across Meghalaya and extending support to sports associations, coaches and individual athletes.

“The Sports Policy of the State is not merely a policy document but a vision document that helps and guides us to move forward to achieve our goals,” he said.

Reiterating the government’s commitment to the youth, Sangma said expenditure on youth-centric programmes should be viewed as an investment in Meghalaya’s future.

“Every programme we have, every single penny we spend is not an expenditure but an investment in the future of our State, that is our youth,” he said.

Congratulating the sportspersons, the Chief Minister said sports goes beyond winning medals or gaining recognition and described it as a way of life.

“Your journey does not end here and I encourage you to lead by example,” Sangma told the athletes.

During the programme, the Chief Minister also interacted with athletes, coaches and representatives and responded to queries and suggestions relating to support for participation in national and international competitions, as well as incentives for medal-winning athletes.

Sanfida Nongrum was conferred the “Achiever of the Month” honour for her notable achievements and contribution to Indian football during the year.
