Shillong, March 27 : Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma inaugurated the 1st edition of the Indian Sailing League (ISL) at the Umiam Water Sports Complex, marking a major step in positioning Meghalaya as a hub for water sports and international events.
The league, being held from March 27 to 31, has brought together 14 teams and 182 participants, including 58 international sailors from eight countries, highlighting its global scale and competitive stature.
In his address, the Chief Minister said the event is part of a long-term vision to unlock the full potential of Umiam and transform it into a leading destination for tourism and international sporting events.
He highlighted improvements in infrastructure, noting the development of hospitality facilities, including upcoming resorts, and expansion of Shillong Airport to accommodate larger aircraft by 2027.
The Chief Minister pointed to a series of recent events, including international concerts, film festivals, and sporting competitions, as part of a broader roadmap to promote Meghalaya globally.
Preparations are underway for hosting the National Games in 2027, along with investments in sports infrastructure such as a slalom course at Umtam. The state also aims to host events linked to the 2036 Olympics in the future.
The Chief Minister expressed hope that the Indian Sailing League will become a regular event and grow to national and international standards, encouraging feedback from participants to improve future editions.
The programme included cultural performances, felicitation of participants, and the release of a postal stamp and sailing magazine, followed by the commencement of the sailing race.
The Indian Sailing League is expected to significantly boost Meghalaya’s profile as a premier destination for water sports and global sporting events.
