CM Meets Khasi Authors Society, Highlights Decision to Make Khasi and Garo Official Languages

Shillong, April 16: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday held a meeting with the Khasi Authors Society to apprise them of the Cabinet’s historic decision to include Khasi and Garo as official languages of the state alongside English.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister said the move was aimed at sending a strong message to both the people of the state and the Government of India on the importance of promoting local languages at all levels, while also strengthening the case for their inclusion in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.

He noted that the demand to recognize Khasi and Garo as official languages has been longstanding and expressed satisfaction that the Cabinet has finally taken the decision. Sangma described it as a major step forward, adding that while full implementation in government communication and examinations would take time, the necessary framework has now been established.

The Chief Minister further informed that once the required processes are completed, legislators will be able to speak and debate in Khasi and Garo in the Assembly. He expressed hope that future Assembly sessions, particularly the Autumn Session, could be held in the new Assembly building where debates in these languages can take place.

Seeking the support of the Khasi Authors Society, Sangma urged its members to assist in drafting the rules required for proper implementation of the decision. He emphasized the need to ensure that the move is carried out effectively and delivers meaningful impact.

He also acknowledged the significant role played by the Khasi Authors Society and the Achik Literature Society in advocating for the recognition of the languages, stating that their sustained efforts were instrumental in achieving this milestone.

Deputy Chief Ministers Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhalang Dhar were also present at the meeting.
