Shillong, November 19 : Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma inaugurated the Ramakrishna Mission College at Sohra today, marking the establishment of the first Ramakrishna Mission–run college in the Northeast. The institution is affiliated with Captain Williamson Sangma State University.
The event was attended by Sohra MLA Gavin Mylliem, Shella MLA Balajied Kupar Synrem, and Swami Achyuteshananda, Trustee of Ramakrishna Math & Mission.
Speaking at the ceremony, Chief Minister Sangma praised the Ramakrishna Mission for its dedication to compassionate service, education, and livelihood enhancement. He highlighted the institution’s role in shaping students into responsible, disciplined, and empathetic citizens. “The greatest investment a government and society can make is in human capital,” he said, emphasizing the transformative role of education. Sangma acknowledged that despite education being a top priority for the government, systemic and structural issues continue to hamper progress.
“There is a complex web of issues preventing us from achieving the quality education we aspire to, even though spending is high,” he noted. He said the government has begun a process of streamlining and restructuring schools to gradually improve the sector.
He urged educators, school administrations, and managing committees to keep students at the heart of all decision-making. “Let the student be the guiding force—not just what is good for teachers or institutions, but what is right for the student,” he stressed.
The Chief Minister assured the Ramakrishna Mission that challenges related to road connectivity, electricity, and water supply faced by its schools would be addressed individually. He expressed gratitude for the Mission’s longstanding contributions to education and vocational development. “The government will work with you in your mission to provide quality education to the children and youth of our state,” he affirmed.
Students presented cultural performances as part of the inaugural celebration. The Chief Minister also felicitated members of the school’s alumni during the ceremony.
