Shillong, October 17 : The College of Teacher Education (PGT), Shillong, held a formal programme on October 17, 2025, to inaugurate a newly constructed additional classroom funded under the Members of Parliament Local Area Development (MPLAD) Scheme 2024–2025. The project, initiated through the efforts of Dr. W.R. Kharlukhi, Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, represents a major step toward enhancing the college’s infrastructure and strengthening its commitment to quality teacher education.
Dr. W.R. Kharlukhi attended the ceremony as Chief Guest and formally inaugurated the new classroom by unveiling the commemorative plaque. He was joined by W.L. Lyngdoh, President of the Governing Body; Dr. Bahunlang Tron, Principal; members of the Governing Body; faculty; student-teachers; and guests.
The programme commenced with a welcome address by Dr. B. Tron, who expressed deep gratitude to Dr. Kharlukhi for his pivotal role in sanctioning the project funds through the MPLAD Scheme, enabling the institution to expand its learning facilities.
In his address, Dr. Kharlukhi praised the College’s dedication to advancing teacher education and emphasized that contributions made under the MPLAD Scheme should be viewed not as acts of generosity, but as the rightful duty of public representatives toward the educational development of their constituencies.
He further encouraged the College to continue its efforts to strengthen infrastructure by seeking additional support from the Chief Minister, aligning institutional growth with evolving academic and societal needs.
In her remarks, Principal Dr. Bahunlang Tron reiterated the College’s vision to evolve into a multidisciplinary institution capable of effectively implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. She acknowledged the challenges of transitioning to new academic frameworks and appealed for continued collaboration with the Government and stakeholders to achieve this transformation.
Echoing similar sentiments, W.L. Lyngdoh emphasized that teacher education institutions must embrace the multidisciplinary approach advocated by NEP 2020. He noted that partnerships between policymakers and educational institutions can serve as effective models for sustainable academic progress in Meghalaya.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by a faculty representative, who expressed appreciation to all dignitaries, the construction committee, and the students for their support. The inauguration marked not only the opening of a new classroom but also a reaffirmation of the College’s enduring mission—to provide quality teacher education while aligning with the nation’s transformative vision under NEP 2020.
