Shillong, June 23 – In a significant move highlighting the Meghalaya government’s commitment to inclusive governance, Bah Pailastar Kharkongor, the Sirdar of Elaka Laitkroh, today inaugurated the newly constructed building of the Khatarshnong Laitkroh C&RD block. The event was graced by the presence of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, along with MLAs Gavin Miguel Mylliem and Matthew Beyond Kurbah.
Speaking at the inauguration, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma emphasized the government’s dedication to involving community leaders and the public in key developmental milestones.
“We believe that inclusive governance begins with participatory implementation,” stated Chief Minister Sangma. “The inauguration of government assets by community leaders like the Sirdar signifies our vision to bring administration closer to the people and instill a sense of shared responsibility and ownership.”
The newly inaugurated Block Integrated Development Complex is part of a comprehensive initiative to upgrade infrastructure across all 46 existing and 10 newly created C&RD blocks throughout Meghalaya. This ambitious project aims to transform outdated and dilapidated rural administrative facilities into modern, functional, and citizen-centric centers.
Chief Minister Sangma highlighted the dire state of many block offices when his government took office in 2018. “Since then, we have taken up a mission-mode approach to improve rural infrastructure across all districts. From repairing police stations and sub-division offices to sanctioning new DC office complexes, staff quarters, and multi-purpose halls—we are working to build a stronger foundation for grassroots governance,” he added.
Reiterating the importance of citizen participation, the Chief Minister underscored the government’s desire for the public to be active participants, not just spectators, in development. “We want the public to not just witness development but be a part of it. By inviting local stakeholders to inaugurate welfare schemes and infrastructure projects, we are encouraging greater civic pride and accountability,” he said.
This people-centric approach is a collaborative development model that recognizes and values the crucial role of traditional institutions, community leaders, and citizens in shaping the State’s progress.
