Community Rallied Against Cancer at Pynursla CHC on World Cancer Day

Shillong, February 5 : The Pynursla Community Health Centre (CHC) in East Khasi Hills district hosted a successful World Cancer Day event today, bringing together healthcare professionals, government officials, and community members under the theme “United by Unique.” Organized by the State Cancer Society of Meghalaya in collaboration with the CHC, the event aimed to raise awareness about cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment.

Dr. C. Iangrai, Joint Director of Health Services (MCH & FW), highlighted the government’s commitment to improving healthcare access, emphasizing the transformation of Sub Health Centres into Health and Wellness Centres equipped to provide comprehensive care, including cancer screening. She urged the community to prioritize regular health checkups, including annual screenings for blood pressure and blood sugar levels, and cancer screenings every five years.

Dr. Anisha Mawlong, Member Secretary of the State Cancer Society of Meghalaya, shared insights into the latest cancer treatment advancements and highlighted the alarming prevalence of cancer in East Khasi Hills, particularly among men. She emphasized the role of tobacco consumption as a major risk factor.

A Lyngkhoi, the Junior Rural Development Officer, emphasized the importance of community involvement and highlighted the government’s commitment to enhancing cancer care and awareness programs in rural areas through initiatives like the Meghalaya Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS).

The event also included cancer screenings for 70 individuals for diabetes, hypertension, and other relevant conditions. Dr. J. Khonglah, Medical Health Officer of Pynursla CHC, stressed the importance of community participation in the fight against cancer.

World Cancer Day 2025 at Pynursla CHC served as a reminder of the collective effort needed to address this global health challenge.
