Conrad Inaugurates New Synthetic Football Turf at Kharbuli, Nongkrem

Shillong, October 16 : Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma today inaugurated the newly constructed Synthetic Football Turf at Madan Centre Playground, Kharbuli, Nongkrem, in East Khasi Hills, in the presence of Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Wailadmiki Shylla. The project, whose foundation was laid in 2021, marks a significant milestone in sports infrastructure developmentand aims to promote grassroots football and youth engagement in the region.

Among the dignitaries present were former MLA Lambor Malngiang, Dr. Balajied Sing Syiem, Syiem of Hima Khyrim, and Manhiam Marbaniang, Chief Engineer, State Sports Council Meghalaya, along with senior officials and community representatives.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister expressed satisfaction at the completion of the project, describing it as a reflection of the government’s commitment to youth empowerment and sports promotion. “Sports teach discipline, hard work, and teamwork. Over the past seven years, more than 70% of our current sports infrastructure has been developed,” he said, highlighting the rapid progress made in creating sporting facilities across Meghalaya.

Sangma emphasised that with Meghalaya’s predominantly young population, investment in education, sports, and infrastructure remains crucial for sustainable growth.

He added that the government is actively promoting sports at the grassroots level, organizing block-level leagues and tournaments to engage young people and encourage a healthy, active lifestyle. “I urge the youth and students to make full use of this facility, to train, learn, and develop their skills responsibly,” he urged.

Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Wailadmiki Shylla commended the Chief Minister for his visionary leadership and proactive approach to development. He highlighted several government initiatives designed to support athletes, musicians, young entrepreneurs, and professionals, through training, financial assistance, and employment programmes. “With the upcoming National Games 2027, the State is preparing to give young athletes access to world-class facilities and greater exposure,” Shylla said, reaffirming the government’s commitment to nurturing sporting talent.

Former MLA Lambor Malngiang expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister for sanctioning the project even during the COVID-19 pandemic, noting the remarkable transformation of the playground since the foundation stone was laid in December 2021. “This project symbolizes the government’s dedication to youth development and infrastructure growth in the constituency,” he said.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by C. Kharbuli, Headman of Kharbuli, who extended appreciation to the Chief Minister, ministers, and officials for their guidance and continued support.

The Synthetic Football Turf at Kharbuli is expected to serve as a hub for football and sporting activities in Nongkrem and nearby areas. The facility will provide young players with modern training conditions, fostering both talent development and community engagement through sports.
