Crime Spree in Meghalaya: Stabbing, Scams, and Vehicle Thefts Reported

Shillong, January 9 : A series of criminal incidents reported across different districts, including an attempted robbery and stabbing, an online impersonation scam, and multiple vehicle thefts and recoveries.

  • South West Khasi Hills Attempted Robbery and Stabbing : Premus Lyngdoh reported that between 1:30 AM and 2:00 AM on January 4th, unidentified individuals attempted to break into his shop cum residence at Mawthawiang Nongtraw, South West Khasi Hills. Upon discovering the intruders, Lyngdoh was stabbed with a sharp object, and the assailants stole his mobile phone before fleeing.
  • South West Garo Hills Online Impersonation Scam : On January 5th, a resident of South West Garo Hills reported falling victim to an online scam. The complainant received an anonymous phone call from someone claiming to be an IPS officer named “Naman Kumar.” The caller stated that Rs. 80,000 had been mistakenly transferred to the complainant’s bank account via PhonePe and requested that the money be sent to a different account. The complainant complied, only to later discover that no money had ever been credited to his account and that the messages he received were fraudulent.
  • East Jaintia Hills Motorcycle Recoveries : On January 4th, police recovered two motorcycles, ML-04C-1365 and ML-11A-6575, abandoned on the roadside in the Kuliang area of East Jaintia Hills (EJH). The following day, January 5th, three more motorcycles—AS-11Z-1788, AS-10G-3814, and AS-11K-4373—were found abandoned in the Wahkoh area of the same district.
  • West Jaintia Hills Scooter Theft : Police received a report on January 6th that two scooters, ML-04D-6452 and ML-04D-8215, had been stolen from Jowai, West Jaintia Hills (WJH).

Police in the respective districts are investigating these incidents.
