Mendipathar, April 03 : A CRPF personnel accidentally discharged their weapon, injuring a vehicle occupant, during a late-night incident in Mendipathar.
The incident occurred around 11:30 PM on April 2, 2025, near Mendipathar bazar. According to reports, a white car bearing registration number AS 01 AM 7750 approached a checkpoint manned by Mendipathar PS and CRPF personnel at high speed and in a rash manner. The vehicle allegedly attempted to run over CRPF personnel, who had to move to safety.
When CRPF personnel approached the vehicle, the driver reportedly tried to flee again. Fearing an attack, a CRPF personnel cocked their AK rifle and attempted to open the vehicle door. As the vehicle moved, the rifle accidentally discharged, injuring the front-seat passenger.
The injured passenger, Neobirth R. Marak (28 years old), sustained bullet injuries to his thighs and was taken to Mendipathar PHC along with the driver, Sengrim K. Sangma. Due to the seriousness of his injuries, Neobirth R. Marak was referred to a higher health facility.
Medical reports indicate that Neobirth R. Marak had consumed alcohol and was unable to control himself. The driver, Sengrim K. Sangma, was found to have a high blood alcohol content (1.9 g/L BAC). A large quantity of beer bottles was also found in the vehicle.
Authorities have initiated necessary legal action and are investigating the incident.
