Curfew Continues in West Garo Hills; Educational Institutions, Offices and Banks to Function Normally During Relaxation

Tura, March 16 : The District Magistrate of West Garo Hills has extended the curfew imposed under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) in view of the prevailing law and order situation in the district.

According to an official order issued by District Magistrate Vibhor Agarwal, IAS, incidents of violence and disturbances to public peace have been reported in different parts of West Garo Hills, posing a serious threat to life, public safety and property.

After reviewing reports from law enforcement agencies, the district administration has decided that the continuation of strict preventive measures is necessary to restore normalcy and prevent further escalation of violence.

The curfew will remain in force from 6:00 AM on March 17, 2026 until 6:00 AM on March 18, 2026, during which residents will not be allowed to move outside their homes within the district limits.

However, authorities have announced a curfew relaxation from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM on March 17 to allow normal public movement and essential activities. During this relaxation period, educational institutions, offices, banks and other establishments will function normally.

The order also directs all law enforcement agencies, Executive Magistrates and police officers to strictly enforce the curfew and take necessary action against anyone violating the restrictions.

Officials warned that any violation of the curfew order will attract legal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and other relevant provisions of law.

The order has been issued with immediate effect considering the urgent need to maintain peace and public order in the district.
