Shillong, July 22 : Eight Bangladeshi nationals apprehended today at New Bongaigaon Railway Station have made startling claims regarding their illegal entry into India via Meghalaya, alleging an absence of border guard patrols and a collapsed barbed wire fence facilitated their infiltration.
The group, detained this morning, stated they crossed into Indian territory last night. “The barbed wire fence had collapsed due to rain and we climbed over the collapsed fence and entered India. There were no security guards there when we sneaked into Indian territory,” one of the apprehended individuals told.
Another member of the group confirmed their origin, stating, “We came from Bangladesh and were on our way to Chennai to work there.” They further detailed that their group of eight crossed over from Jamalpur, Bangladesh, into Meghalaya.
Adding to the alarm, one of the Bangladeshi infiltrators suggested that more individuals might have exploited similar vulnerabilities to cross into Indian territory. These disclosures raise significant concerns about border security along the Indo-Bangladesh frontier in Meghalaya, particularly regarding nighttime patrolling and fence integrity. Authorities are expected to investigate these claims thoroughly.
