DoT Rolls Out CEIR Portal in Meghalaya to Curb Misuse of Stolen Phones

Shillong, January 6 : The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Government of India, has developed and operationalised the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal to strengthen telecom security and protect consumers in Meghalaya. The portal enables citizens to report lost or stolen mobile phones, support tracking and recovery, and prevent misuse of missing devices—steps officials say enhance public safety.

Since the CEIR facility was introduced in Meghalaya, citizens have increasingly used the portal to block, trace and recover handsets. As of January 6, 2026, a total of 5,914 mobile handsets have been reported lost or stolen on the CEIR portal in the state. Of these, 1,662 handsets have been traced and recovered, indicating improved system effectiveness and coordination among agencies.

The CEIR portal offers three key services: Block lost or stolen mobile phones to prevent misuse. Track and recover devices when they reappear on telecom networks. Unblock recovered phones through the same platform

Officials said the progress in Meghalaya has been supported by active cooperation among Telecom Service Providers (TSPs), State Police authorities, and growing public awareness of DoT’s digital services.

Beyond consumer protection, the CEIR system is expected to play a wider role in curbing mobile-linked cybercrime, discouraging the illegal trade of handsets, and strengthening national digital security.

Citizens have been urged to promptly report the loss or theft of mobile handsets through the CEIR portal at https://www.ceir.gov.in.

DoT stated it remains committed to expanding digital public services and ensuring a safe, secure telecom ecosystem for all citizens.
