East Jaintia Hills DC Issues Public Notice on Traffic Violations, Warns of Strict Penalties

Khliehriat, April 20 : The Office of the Deputy Commissioner, East Jaintia Hills District, has issued a public notice directing all vehicle owners and drivers to strictly comply with the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR), 1989, warning that violations will attract stringent penalties, including fines and imprisonment.

The notice emphasizes that the directive has been issued in the interest of public safety and to ensure smooth traffic flow across the district. Authorities have outlined a range of common traffic violations along with corresponding legal provisions and penalties.

Key offences highlighted include driving without a valid licence, allowing minors or unauthorised persons to drive, not wearing seat belts or helmets, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Penalties for such offences range from fines of ₹1,000 to ₹10,000, and in serious cases, imprisonment of up to two years.

The notice also warns against operating vehicles without valid permits, insurance, or pollution certificates, as well as dangerous driving and use of tinted or black films on vehicle windows. Juvenile driving has been flagged as a serious offence, with penalties including a fine of ₹25,000 and possible imprisonment of the guardian or vehicle owner.

Authorities have further advised all drivers to ensure that their vehicles carry valid documents such as registration certificates, driving licences, insurance, fitness certificates, and pollution under control (PUC) certificates at all times.

The Deputy Commissioner informed that Executive Magistrates, police personnel, and enforcement teams from the District Transport Office will carry out regular checking drives across the district to enforce compliance.

The administration has urged the public to adhere strictly to traffic rules to avoid legal action and to contribute towards safer roads in East Jaintia Hills.
