Shillong, June 26: The Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills has authorised all Block Development Officers (BDOs) in the district to function as Executive Magistrates for matters relating to the registration of births and deaths, with immediate effect.
According to an official order issued on Friday, the decision has been taken under Section 13(3) of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, read with Rule 9(3) of the Meghalaya Registration of Births and Deaths Rules, 1999.
Under the new arrangement, all BDOs within East Khasi Hills District will act as Executive Magistrates for the disposal of cases relating to birth and death registration, including registration, correction, cancellation, delayed registration and other related matters within their respective jurisdictions.
The order further states that all applications concerning these matters should henceforth be submitted to the respective Block Development Offices to facilitate timely disposal of cases.
The notification has come into force with immediate effect and will remain in operation until further orders are issued by the district administration.
