Shillong, October 27 : In a major operation, Meghalaya Police arrested five Bangladeshi nationals in Shillong on Sunday night after intercepting a tourist vehicle at the ISBT junction, Mawlai Mawiong, based on specific intelligence inputs.
According to police sources, the Special Cell and Special Operations Team (SOT) conducted a naka (checkpoint)around 8:42 p.m. after receiving credible information that a group of suspected Bangladeshi nationals were traveling from Srinagar and heading towards the India-Bangladesh border in a tourist vehicle.
During the operation, a tourist vehicle bearing registration number ML05 51358, carrying five occupants, was stopped and searched. Upon preliminary questioning, the individuals failed to produce any valid documents proving Indian citizenship. Further interrogation revealed that all five were residents of Bangladesh.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Md. Alamgir Mia (25), resident of Habiganj, Bangladesh, Lelepa Begum (40), resident of Sylhet Muli Bazar, Bangladesh, Musanat Jahana Khatoon (35), resident of Sunamganj, Bangladesh, Md. Imammul Hassan (18), resident of Habiganj, Bangladesh, Md. Fajid Bilal (47), resident of Bangaon, Bangladesh
All five have been taken into custody and a criminal case has been registered at Mawlai Police Station for further investigation. Authorities are currently probing how the individuals entered Indian territory and whether any human trafficking or illegal network is involved in facilitating their movement.
