Forest for Future: Connecting Forest and Food for Sustainability

Shillong, March 21 : To mark International Day of Forests, Saindur Enviro, in collaboration with Sankardev College, the State Council of Science, Technology, and Environment (SCSTE), and the Nongumlong community, organized a day-long event focused on “Forest for Future: Connecting Forest and Food for Sustainability” at Nongumlong Secondary School, Upper Shillong.

The event, attended by over 190 participants, including students and community members, featured expert talks and a plantation drive. Prof. Dibyendu Paul, former Professor at NEHU, emphasized the significance of wild edible plants and the need to protect forests from deforestation and fires.

E. Iangap, Range Forest Sub-division Officer, discussed the current forest conditions and conservation efforts, aligning her discussion with the theme “Forests and Food.” She highlighted the role of forests in sustaining livelihoods and providing oxygen, while also addressing the impact of urbanization and pollution.

Vivek Kumar, Director of Saindur Enviro, delivered a presentation on the importance of forests in sustaining life, regulating climate, and preserving biodiversity. He cited data from the India State of Forest Report (ISFR), noting both positive trends and declines in forest cover, particularly in Meghalaya. He urged participants to commit to forest conservation for a sustainable future.

The event included a plantation drive where 150 fruit tree saplings were planted in the village. Participants also received hands-on training in forest health assessment using the quadrat method, contributing to a preliminary biodiversity survey.

The event was praised for its collaborative approach, bringing together experts, students, and community members. Organizers expressed gratitude to SCSTE, Saindur Enviro, the Dorbar Shnong of Nongumlong Village, and Nongumlong Secondary School for their support. The event successfully raised awareness about the importance of forest conservation and engaged participants in practical conservation efforts.
