Shillong, June 4: Dr. Sr. Philomena Kharakor, former Principal of St. Mary’s College, Shillong, a member of the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of the Mission (RNDM), noted author, and a strong advocate for Khasi culture and literature, passed away on Thursday, leaving behind a rich legacy in education, faith, and literary contributions.
Born on September 8, 1943, Sr. Philomena professed her final religious vows on January 2, 1974, dedicating her life to the service of God, education, and society.
She served as Principal of St. Mary’s College from 1996 to 2007 and played a pivotal role in advancing higher education, particularly for women in Meghalaya. During her tenure, the institution witnessed significant academic growth and development.
Apart from her contributions to education, Sr. Philomena was widely respected as a scholar and author. Through her writings and research, she made valuable contributions towards preserving and promoting Khasi language, literature, and culture.
In recognition of her outstanding contribution to Khasi literature and learning, the Khasi Authors Society honoured her with a special award in 2006.
Following the news of her demise, members of the Catholic community, along with numerous priests, nuns, former students, and well-wishers, gathered at St. Mary’s Convent in Laitumkhrah to pay their last respects and participate in the Holy Mass offered in her memory.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at St. Mary’s Convent, Shillong, after which her mortal remains will be laid to rest at the Catholic Cemetery in Laitumkhrah.
