Online Fraud, Theft, Vehicle Theft, and Murder Highlight Meghalaya Crime Incidents

Shillong, March 12 : Meghalaya has seen a range of criminal incidents, including thefts, vehicle thefts, ATM fraud, and a murder, according to recent reports.

  • Online Fraud: A resident of Shillong has fallen victim to an online shopping scam, losing money after being lured by a fake prize offer.
    The victim reported that on March 3rd, 2025, she received an anonymous phone call from someone claiming to be a Customer Executive of ‘Renee Cosmetics.’ The caller informed her that she had won a prize in a promotional campaign.
    The caller convinced her that she would receive an iPhone 15 as a gift if she purchased items worth ₹5,000 from ‘Amazon,’ with the promise of ₹3,500 cashback. The complainant complied with the instructions. However, the complainant later realized that she had been deceived and had not received the promised prize or cashback.
  • Shop Theft: Rahul Sharma reported that edible items valued at approximately ₹1 lakh were stolen from his shop in Lumdiengjri, Shillong, on March 10th.
  • Cable Theft: Anshit Kakkar reported the theft of FRC cables valued at around ₹69,000 from Golf Links Junction, Shillong, on March 5th.
  • Motorcycle Theft: Wanmi S. Passah reported the theft of his motorcycle (ML-05AC-6359) from Dum Dum Lumiablot, Nongthymmai, Shillong, on March 9th.
  • Car Theft: Safina Begum reported the theft of her Hyundai vehicle (ML-05C-5539) from Lumshatsngi, Laban, Shillong, on March 9th.
  • Office Burglary: William Lyngdoh Mawlong reported a break-in at the Delivery Ltd. office in Umbang Sumer (RiBhoi), where ₹65,863 in cash was stolen.
  • ATM Fraud: Sakkar Ali lodged a complaint that on March 8th circa 12.30 pm, he sought help from an unidentified person to withdraw cash Rs. 10,000/- from an ATM at Hallidayganj (West Garo Hills). However, the person switched his ATM card with his and later withdrew Rs. 72,700/- from his bank account.
  • Murder: On March 10th at about 8.30 am, Sinjang A Sangma informed Nokma of Dajugre village (West Garo Hills) that unknown miscreant(s) murdered his son Dilu R Marak (25 yrs) and dumped the body near a paddy field at Dajugre village.
  • Scooter Theft: Nomina K. Sangma reported the theft of her scooter (ML-13A-6822) from the premises of Mendipathar PHC (NGH) on March 10th.

Authorities are investigating the reported incidents.
