Fuel Supply Stable in Meghalaya; Adequate Stocks, Normal Distribution Across State

Shillong, April 29: The supply of LPG and petroleum products in Meghalaya remains stable and sufficient, with authorities assuring uninterrupted distribution and adequate stock levels across the state. The update was shared during a press conference held at the Main Secretariat, Shillong, organised by the Press Information Bureau (PIB) in collaboration with the Department of Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs and Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs).

Officials informed that all fuel retail outlets are functioning normally without any restrictions on sales. Meghalaya currently has 334 fuel retail outlets, including those operated by IndianOil, Bharat Petroleum, Hindustan Petroleum, and private players. Existing stock levels are sufficient to meet around 25 days of petrol demand and 46 days of diesel demand, with consumption patterns remaining consistent with normal trends.

In the LPG sector, approximately 3.7 lakh consumers are being served through a network of 66 distributors across the state. Authorities said there is no shortage of domestic LPG cylinders, with an average of over 4,100 refills delivered daily. A backlog of around five days is being cleared through scheduled deliveries.

Officials also highlighted improvements in digital adoption, noting that 83 percent of LPG bookings are now made online, up from 68 percent two months ago. Delivery Authentication Code (DAC) compliance has also increased significantly, enhancing transparency and reducing the risk of diversion.

Under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), about 1.7 lakh beneficiaries in the state are being encouraged to complete eKYC to streamline services. Additionally, 5 kg LPG cylinders have been reintroduced to support low-consumption households, migrant workers, and students.

Officials further stated that commercial LPG allocation is being maintained at 70 percent in line with central guidelines, prioritising essential sectors such as hospitals, educational institutions, and government offices. Expansion of piped natural gas (PNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) infrastructure is also underway to reduce dependence on LPG cylinders.

To strengthen supply infrastructure, an LPG bottling plant is being set up in Ri Bhoi district and is expected to become operational by the third quarter of this year.

Authorities emphasised that the supply situation has remained stable since early March and urged citizens to avoid panic buying or spreading rumours. The government and OMCs have assured that the fuel supply chain in Meghalaya is functioning smoothly and will continue to meet public demand without disruption.
