Tura, March 16: Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), Albinush R. Marak, has tendered his resignation from the post with immediate effect, citing moral grounds following the decision of several members to move a no-confidence motion against his leadership.
In a resignation letter addressed to the Chairman of the GHADC on March 16, Marak stated that he has stepped down from the office of the Chief Executive Member in view of the prevailing circumstances and the loss of confidence from the majority of members in the council.
Marak said that during his tenure as CEM, he had sincerely worked for the welfare, development and overall progress of the people of Garo Hills. He also noted that the Executive Committee under his leadership had undertaken steps to pass and implement various rules, regulations and laws aimed at protecting the rights, customs and interests of the people of the region.
He further mentioned that several initiatives and developmental measures were undertaken with the objective of strengthening the administration of the council and serving the people. However, some initiatives could not be fully implemented due to certain circumstances.
The CEM stated that he had come to know that 21 members of the District Council had decided to bring a motion of no confidence against his leadership. In a democratic institution, he said, the confidence of the majority of members is essential for the proper functioning of the Executive Committee.
“In view of the above circumstances and on moral grounds, I consider it proper and appropriate to step down from the office of the Chief Executive Member rather than continue in a position where the majority of members no longer repose confidence in my leadership,” Marak stated in the letter.
Despite stepping down, Marak reaffirmed his commitment to continue serving the people of Garo Hills. He said that public service does not depend on holding a particular office and that he would continue to dedicate himself to the welfare and betterment of the people in whatever capacity possible.
He also requested the Chairman of the council to kindly accept his resignation from the post of Chief Executive Member.
