Shillong, February 17 : A meeting of the State Cabinet was held yesterday, during which several important decisions were taken, including the schedule for the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections, establishment of a Police Accountability Commission, approval of sports infrastructure projects, and passage of a new flood zoning bill.
The Cabinet decided that elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) will be held on April 10, 2026.
Polling will take place on April 10, while counting of votes is scheduled for April 14, 2026.
The gazette notification for the elections will be issued on March 9, 2026. The last date for filing nominations is March 16, 2026, with scrutiny of nominations to be conducted the same day after 3:00 PM. The last date for withdrawal of candidature has been fixed for March 17, 2026.
The final list of valid nominations along with allotment of symbols will be published by March 18, 2026.
The Cabinet approved the establishment of a Police Accountability Commission as mandated under the Meghalaya Police Act.
The Commission will be headed by Peter Ingty, IAS (Retd.) as Chairman, with V.R. Syiem, IAS (Retd.) as Member.
In preparation for hosting the National Games of India, the Cabinet approved revised estimates for major sports infrastructure projects in the state.
The approved projects include:
- Aquatic and Tennis Complex at Umsawli
- Hostel Block at Umsawli
- Sunny Hills facility in Tura
- Pa Togan Nengminja Sangma Athletic Stadium
These projects are aimed at strengthening sports infrastructure ahead of the national event.
The Cabinet also approved the Meghalaya Flood Plain Zoning Bill, 2026, marking another key legislative decision taken during the meeting.
