Shillong, July 2 : The Health Department of Meghalaya has clarified the recent reports of medicines being disposed of in a dumping area at Marten, Mawiong Shillong. In a statement, the department said that the medicines were expired and had been stored in the Central Medical Store since the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. They were disposed of in accordance with the appropriate procedures.
The department said that the expired medicines were taking up a lot of space in the store and were causing inconvenience as newly indented medicines had to be accommodated. They were also a potential health hazard if they were not disposed of properly.
The department said that the disposal of the expired medicines was carried out by the Appropriated Authority on June 29, 2023. They said that all the necessary procedures were followed in the disposal process.
The department has assured the public that all expired medicines are disposed of in a safe and environmentally friendly manner. They said that they are committed to providing quality healthcare to the people of Meghalaya.
