Heightened Measles Alert Issued in East Khasi Hills Amid Regional Outbreak Concerns

Shillong, April 20 : In response to ongoing measles outbreaks in neighbouring Bangladesh and the increased risk in border areas, authorities have intensified surveillance and preventive measures across East Khasi Hills district.

Officials have directed all concerned departments to strengthen early detection, reporting, and response systems. Any case of fever accompanied by a rash—considered a suspected measles symptom—must be reported immediately, regardless of age.

The School Education Department and Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) have been specifically instructed to ensure prompt reporting of suspected cases identified in schools and Anganwadi Centres to the nearest health facility, Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM), or Medical Officer.

Authorities have also emphasized close coordination with the Health Department and the World Health Organization (WHO) for timely investigation and response.

As part of infection control measures, children suspected of measles are to be strictly barred from attending school or Anganwadi Centres until full recovery. They are advised to remain isolated at home with minimal contact to prevent further transmission.

Teachers and Anganwadi workers have been sensitized to identify symptoms early and report cases without delay. Daily vigilance has been mandated to ensure swift detection and containment of any potential spread.
