Shillong, September 28: The Hynñiewtrep Youths Council (HYC), Nongtrai Unit, on Saturday detained a transgender person and a woman suspected by the organisation to be Bangladeshi nationals at Nongtrai in East Khasi Hills district.
The two were identified as Jhinuk Hijrani, 22, a transgender person, and Priyanka Kumari, 20, who were reportedly found travelling in a vehicle bearing registration number ML05 AC 5971 at around 10 am on September 26.
According to the HYC Nongtrai Unit, the two were suspected of having entered India from Bangladesh through an unfenced border area without valid documents. The organisation subsequently handed them over to the Mawsynram Police Station for further investigation and also filed an FIR against them.
In the FIR lodged by HYC Nongtrai Unit Assistant Secretary Buddin Shabong, the organisation stated that it had received information at around 7 am regarding two suspected Bangladeshi nationals who had allegedly travelled through a forested area and reached the Mawdon-Shella road, reportedly with the intention of proceeding towards Shillong.
In a statement issued to the media along with photographs, the HYC said Jhinuk Hijrani claimed to be from West Bengal, while Priyanka Kumari claimed to be from Uttar Pradesh. However, according to the organisation, they were unable to produce documents to establish their Indian citizenship when asked to do so.
The two were subsequently taken into police custody, and the HYC stated that the case was registered under provisions of Section 12 (1) (a) (c) of the Passport Act, 1920, and related passport regulations.
