HYC Umwai Unit apprehends suspected Bangladeshi national, hands him over to authorities

Shillong, October 21: The Hynñiewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC), Umwai Unit, along with local residents, apprehended a man suspected of being a Bangladeshi national who had allegedly entered India illegally and handed him over to law enforcement authorities for verification and further investigation.

According to a statement issued by the organisation, the incident occurred at Umwai village on October 20 at around 6:30 pm after local residents raised suspicions regarding the man’s nationality and legal status in the country.

The HYC claimed that preliminary questioning raised doubts about his Indian citizenship, leading the organisation to suspect that he may have entered India without valid documents.

Following the incident, the HYC Umwai Unit handed the individual over to the concerned authorities to verify his identity, nationality and immigration status and initiate appropriate legal action if any violation was established.

Expressing concern over alleged illegal immigration from Bangladesh, the organisation urged the authorities to strengthen monitoring and conduct thorough investigations into suspected cases of illegal entry.

The HYC also appealed to the public to remain vigilant, claiming that unchecked illegal immigration could have implications for peace and security in Meghalaya and the country as a whole.

Meanwhile, the nationality and immigration status of the individual have not yet been officially confirmed by the authorities.
