Khliehriat, December 21 : East Jaintia Hills Police have arrested two persons in connection with an IED blast that occurred at the Dhar construction company campus near Shymplong village in the district, police said in a press release issued.
According to police, a complaint was received at Lumshnong Police Station on December 16 reporting that the explosion took place on December 15 around 12:15 am. An in-situ examination confirmed the use of explosive substances and an improvised explosive device (IED). The blast damaged a water tanker truck, but no injuries or casualties were reported.
A case has been registered at Lumshnong PS under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) read with Section 3 of the Explosive Substances Act, police said, adding that investigation is underway.
Police said two individuals—Richard Suchen (31) and Pynshaitbor Syih (45), both residents of Shymplong village—have been arrested in connection with the incident.
Investigation so far has revealed that Smiki Tongper allegedly planned and executed the blast in coordination with the two arrested accused and an unidentified member of the banned organisation HNLC, the police release stated.
Police also noted that Tongper is an accused in a separate case registered at Khliehriat Woman Police Station.
During a search of Tongper’s house and compound, police said they recovered and seized multiple items, including safety fuses, detonators, empty detonator caps, gun powder, splinters, a country-made rifle, and two BAOFENG handsets, among others.
Police appealed to the public to share any information about other persons involved, assuring that informants’ identities will be kept confidential and that a suitable reward will be given.
