International Women’s Day Celebrated at Mawngap with Focus on Women’s Empowerment

Shillong, March 16 : International Women’s Day 2026 was celebrated at Mawngap Taxi Stand in East Khasi Hills district on March 16 under the theme “Give to Gain.” The programme was organised by the Office of the District Social Welfare Officer, East Khasi Hills, in collaboration with the One Stop Centre (Shillong and Mawphlang) and the village organisations of Mawngap Dukan and Sawlad Marbisu.

The event began with welcome and introductory addresses, followed by speeches from representatives of the Health Department, Police Department, and District Legal Services Authority. Speakers highlighted the importance of women’s health, safety, and legal awareness, encouraging greater community participation in supporting women’s rights and welfare.

A skit performed by the Jawdohitir group drew attention to the importance of community support, gender equality, and the empowerment of women. The performance reflected the spirit of the theme “Give to Gain,” which promotes collective effort and mutual support for the progress of women in society.

Special addresses were delivered by Lancester Marbaniang, MDC of Mawphlang-Diengiei; Iamonlang Syiem, Chairperson of the Women Commission; and the Chief Guest, Matthew Beyonstar Kurbah, MLA of Mawphlang (ST) Constituency.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by representatives of the village organisations of Mawngap Dukan and Sawlad Marbisu.
