Shillong, July 31: Bollywood actor and Northeast United FC (NEUFC) founder John Abraham visited Ward’s Lake in Shillong on Friday, where he praised Meghalaya’s natural beauty, vibrant musical culture and efforts to promote tourism in the state.
During the visit, Abraham took a walk around the lake promenade and interacted with visitors and tourism stakeholders while experiencing the surroundings of one of Shillong’s most popular tourist attractions. He also attended a specially curated live performance by artists associated with the Chief Minister’s Meghalaya Grassroots Music Program (CM-MGMP) and interacted with the participating musicians. Officials briefed him about the programme and its efforts to support young and emerging artists while promoting Meghalaya’s musical heritage and strengthening Shillong’s reputation as the “Music Capital of India.”
Describing Ward’s Lake as a “pristine and beautiful destination,” Abraham said it remains one of Meghalaya’s major tourist attractions. He also described the performances by CM-MGMP artists as a “revelation” and appreciated Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma’s efforts to create opportunities for musicians to showcase their talent and earn a livelihood.
Speaking about his first visit to Ward’s Lake, Abraham said he hopes to return soon in his personal time to enjoy the destination at leisure. “I have come here for the first time and trust me I will be back very soon in my own time, where I can just sit on a swing, walk on the bridge and spend some time,” he said. The actor also appreciated Meghalaya’s Tourist Buddies initiative, highlighting its role in assisting visitors and helping provide a safer and more welcoming tourism experience.
According to the Tourism Department, the Meghalaya Government has been investing in tourism infrastructure while promoting the state’s music, culture and festivals as part of efforts to strengthen Meghalaya’s position as a leading tourism destination.
The government said its approach of integrating tourism, music and community participation is aimed at promoting the state’s natural and cultural heritage while creating livelihood and economic opportunities for local artists and communities.
